The ABA Process at Harmony Bridge
Harmony Bridge is committed to providing Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) based on the science of learning and behavior. ABA is widely used to help children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) develop essential life skills, reduce challenging behaviors, and improve overall quality of life.
Here's an overview of the ABA process at Harmony Bridge
01
Assessment
- Initial Assessment:
Our process begins with a comprehensive assessment conducted by one of our skilled Board-Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA). This assessment may include direct observation, interviews with parents or caregivers, and standardized tools to understand the child's current skills, behaviors, preferences, and areas of need. - Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA):
A key component of our assessment is the FBA, which identifies specific challenging behaviors, their potential triggers, and the functions they serve (e.g., seeking attention, avoiding tasks).
02
Development of an Individualized Treatment Plan (ITP)
- Goal Setting:
Based on the assessment results, the BCBA collaborates with the family to set specific, measurable, and achievable goals tailored to the child's unique needs. Goal scan focuses on communication, social skills, adaptive skills (e.g., dressing, eating), and reduction of challenging behaviors. - Intervention Strategies:
Our goal is to ensure that the ITP outlines evidence-based intervention strategies to teach new skills and reduce unwanted behaviors. These strategies are rooted in principles like reinforcement, prompting, shaping, modeling, and chaining.
03
Implementation of the Treatment Plan
- Therapy Sessions:
A team of Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs)implements the ITP through one-on-one therapy sessions with the child. Sessions may occur in various settings, such as the home, clinic, school, or community, depending on the child's needs and goals. - Data Collection:
At Harmony Bridge, it is MANDATORY to meticulously collect data at EVERY session to track performance, such as the number of successful attempts to perform a task, instances of challenging behaviors, and overall progress toward goals.
04
Ongoing Monitoring and Data Analysis
- Regular Review of Progress:
The BCBA reviews the collected data regularly to monitor the child's progress toward goals. This review helps determine if the interventions are effective or need adjustments. - Data-Driven Decision Making:
Based on the analysis, the BCBA may modify strategies, techniques, or goals to ensure continued progress. This may involve increasing the difficulty of tasks, introducing new skills, or changing reinforcement methods.
05
Parent and Caregiver Training
- Involvement of Families:
Harmony Bridge emphasizes the involvement of parents and caregivers in the therapy process. Training sessions are conducted to educate families on implementing ABA strategies consistently across different environments (e.g., home, school, community). - Empowering Caregivers:
We continuously equip families with practical skills and knowledge, ABA promotes generalization and maintenance of learned behaviors, ensuring progress continues beyond therapy sessions.
06
Generalization and Maintenance
- Generalization of Skills:
Our Staff focuses on helping the child apply learned skills in various settings and contexts. This may involve practicing skills in different environments, with different people, or under different conditions to ensure that behaviors are generalized. - Maintenance of Skills:
The Harmony Bridge BCBA and therapy team develop strategies to maintain learned behaviors over time, even after therapy is reduced or discontinued. Maintenance involves ongoing practice, reinforcement, and monitoring to prevent regression.
07
Periodic Re-Evaluation
- Re-Assessments:
Harmony Bridge BCBAs routinely conduct periodic re-assessments are conducted to evaluate the child's progress, reassess goals, and make necessary adjustments to the treatment plan. - Continuous Improvement:
The ABA process at Harmony Bridge is dynamic, continuously adapting to the child's evolving needs to ensure they achieve their highest potential.
08
Transition Planning
- Preparation for Transitions:
As the child progresses, BCBAs at Harmony Bridge may involve planning for transitions to new environments, such as moving to a new classroom, school, or community setting. The goal is to ensure that the child continues to use their skills successfully in different contexts.
We follow the key principles of ABA:
Positive Reinforcement
Rewarding desired behaviors to increase their frequency.
Prompting and Fading
Using prompts to encourage correct behavior and gradually removing them as the child becomes more independent.
Shaping
Reinforcing successive approximations of a target behavior until the desired behavior is achieved.
Task Analysis and Chaining
Breaking down complex tasks into smaller, manageable steps and teaching them sequentially.
The ABA process at Harmony Bridge is highly individualized, data-driven, and flexible, allowing for adjustments to meet each child’s unique needs and circumstances. The ultimate goal is to enhance the child’s quality of life by promoting independence, social inclusion, and functional skills. Here's an overview of the ABA process at Harmony Bridge
